Reporting to the Director of IP Protection Technology in our Shenzhen, China office, the Sr. Forensics Engineer (APAC) will be be a key part of the technical team responsible for worldwide compliance.
This individual will work closely with Dolby's IP Protection Group to prevent licensing and trademark infringement in the market by making sure our customers comply with our licensing agreements. To that end we have developed several programs that enable us to monitor the marketplace by efficiently managing and analyzing large amounts of market data. In addition, we ensure our policies are effective by working closely with Retail, Customs, Industry Associations, Law Enforcement and Trade Show administrators.
The Sr. Engineer will take the lead on providing field audit and tradeshow support, leveraging Dolby-specific technical expertise and partnering with colleagues as needed. The position will also act as a technical resource across the larger IPP organization, and independently perform product testing and analysis/due diligence activities as necessary. The individual will interact regularly with global compliance personnel, auditors, and other compliance stakeholders worldwide in support of our global brand protection activities.
Responsibilities:
- Audit support:
- Pre-audit analysis – general product analysis of licensees selected for audits, diligence on cross sales of and between components/technologies of licensees and their related entities under review
- Participate in and/or lead aspects of audit calls
- In field support – onsite and offsite assistance in support of product sample/spec testing in the course of audit fieldwork, provision of product knowledge and expertise in support of audits
- Post-audit analysis – product and technology assessment for negotiation purposes
- Due diligence on products and technologies, product specific testing and technology classification - serve as lead resource on the team for the following activities often requiring in-field presence:
- Raids
- Customs seizures
- Maintenance of database on the analysis of continuous bond samples in the process of being established [US Customs and Border Protection]
- Retail marketplace analysis
*LItigation support - technology and products [as needed]
- Contribute to Brand Protection Strategy planning
- Trade show enforcement - product related assistance (may take the lead on this for most tradeshows)
- Software Compliance
- Audit Assistance
- Identifying and reviewing potentially infringing software applications
- Provide technical liaison and engineering support to compliance
- Assist in technical supervision and education of other Dolby products and services.
- Train compliance and audit personnel on Dolby products;
- Must be willing to work flexible hours and be able to work late on short notice.
Qualifications:
- BSEE and at least 5 years’ relevant work experience in forensic engineering or technical IP protection desired.
- Deep experience in product testing and analysis of the Dolby family of products highly desired. Must have an aptitude for mechanical engineering. Knowledge of electrical components and paths. Superior electronic testing and repair skills including use of test equipment such as multi-meters, oscilloscopes, real time analyzers and distortion analyzers.
- Must possess a basic understanding of standard analog and digital recording equipment.
- Ability to use PC based software and hardware for equipment control, measurement, and report submission and communications.
- Deep understanding of the Dolby business model. Specifically, a solid understanding of Tier 1 IT and Consumer Electronics distribution channels
- Strong knowledge of the inter-relationships as well as interactions between all of Dolby’s databases (financial/legal/compliance/engineering)
- Flexibility in day-to-day work
- Ability to work well in [and with] a loosely organized team
- Strong analytical skills
- Diligent, deadline oriented
- Keen understanding of technology in the context of intellectual property
- Strong ability to think independently and deeply about problems/solutions
- Ability to work effectively across functions to achieve goals established in a team environment
- Mandarin and English language fluency required (both written and verbal)
- Strong written communication skills - ability to articulate verbally and in writing technical issues to stakeholders
- International travel required
